The term "SEO" is used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A number of factors are important when optimizing a website, including the content and structure of the website's copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process.
Second, the answer for the rest of us:
Basically, SEO is a method of properly constructing your
website so that search engines will understand what it is
and rank it accordingly. Many of the approaches regarding
how search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.) index and rank
websites are a bit of a black box* (see definition below),
but we know enough of the approaches and tricks to get your
move site up the search rankings with a little work.
